VGKC Antibody

The VGKC Antibody test is a blood test that measures the presence and levels of antibodies against voltage-gated potassium channels (VGKC) in the bloodstream. This test helps evaluate autoimmune activity affecting the nervous system and assists in diagnosing conditions like limbic encephalitis, autoimmune encephalitis or neuromyotonia.

Understanding VGKC Antibody
Voltage-gated potassium channels (VGKCs) are specialized proteins found in nerve cell membranes that help regulate electrical signaling in the nervous system. These channels play a critical role in maintaining proper nerve function and muscle excitability. In some autoimmune disorders, the body produces antibodies that target VGKC, associated proteins, most commonly Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 protein (LGI1) or Contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2). interfering with normal nerve signaling. These antibodies may also be found in other conditions such as acquired neuromyotonia, painful neuropathy, Morvan's syndrome, and rare tumors (e.g., thymoma, small-cell lung cancer).
The VGKC Antibody test may be recommended if you experience neurological symptoms such as muscle stiffness, cramps, twitching, seizures, memory problems, confusion, or unexplained neurological dysfunction. Detecting these antibodies can help diagnose autoimmune neurological conditions such as limbic encephalitis, Morvan’s syndrome, or neuromyotonia. The test is also valuable for monitoring disease progression or response to immunotherapy.
No special preparation is required for the VGKC Antibody test. Inform a doctor about all the medications, supplements, and underlying illnesses, as all these factors may affect the test results.
Test result ranges are approximate and may differ slightly between labs depending on the methodology and laboratory guidelines. Do not self-medicate, and always consult a doctor to understand the test results correctly.
Please note: This is an outsourced test. The sample is collected by TATA 1MG and processed at a NABL accredited partnered lab.
What does VGKC Antibody measure?
The VGKC Antibody test measures the presence and concentration of antibodies directed against voltage-gated potassium channels (VGKC) associated proteins (Leucine-rich glioma inactivated protein 1(LGI1) and Contactin-associated protein 2 (CASPR2) in the blood. These antibodies indicate that the immune system is mistakenly attacking nerve cells, which can disrupt normal nerve signaling.
Elevated VGKC antibody levels may suggest autoimmune neurological disorders such as limbic encephalitis, Morvan’s syndrome, or neuromyotonia. Detecting and quantifying these antibodies helps doctors confirm the diagnosis, guide treatment strategies, and monitor the effectiveness of immunotherapy. Low or undetectable levels typically indicate that VGKC-mediated autoimmune activity is unlikely.
