Ultrasound KUB with PVR
Understanding Ultrasound KUB with PVR
What is Ultrasound KUB with PVR?
The Ultrasound KUB with PVR is a non-invasive, safe, radiation-free imaging test that assesses the kidneys, ureters, and urinary bladder (KUB), along with the amount of urine left in the bladder after urination (Post-Void Residual) using ultrasonography. It is commonly used to evaluate urinary tract symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, urinary retention, frequent urination, painful urination, or incomplete bladder emptying.
The KUB part provides detailed images of the kidneys along with ureters and bladder. It helps diagnose problems like kidney stones, swelling of the kidneys, bladder stones, or infections. The PVR component involves scanning the bladder immediately after urination, measuring the residual urine volume to assess bladder function. Doctors use this test to check for treatment response in people who have long-term urinary or kidney problems.
Usually, a full bladder is required for this test, so you may be asked to drink plenty of water before the scan and avoid urinating until after the first part (KUB) of the scan is done. After that, you will be asked to empty your bladder for the second part (PVR) of the scan.
