Understanding Ultrasound Guided Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology
What is Ultrasound Guided Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology?
Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology is a diagnostic procedure that inserts a small needle into a suspicious mass to extract some cells which are then visualized under the microscope. It can be used for the aspiration of cyst in the breast, thryroid, lymph nodes, liver, lung etc. The technique is used to diagnose several inflammatory conditions and cancer. The test is also useful to check the progress of tumor treatment. It does not use ionizing radiation, has no known harmful effects, and provides a clear picture of soft tissues that don't show up well on x-ray images.
