PRA Plasma Renin Activity

Plasma renin activity (PRA) test measures the amount of renin, an enzyme that helps to control the blood pressure. It controls the production of aldosterone hormone responsible for maintaining blood pressure, sodium and potassium level in the body. This test is advised in case of uncontrolled hypertension especially in young age.
Abnormal test results might indicate certain medical conditions including Addison's disease, cirrhosis, hypertension, hemorrhage, hypokalemia, renal tumors, renovascular hypertension and adrenal gland disorder. An aldosterone test is also recommended along with this test.
