What is Metanephrine-Free, Plasma?
The metanephrines- Free Plasma test measures the amount of metanephrine in the blood which are the by products of chemicals that are released by the tumor of the adrenal gland. The test is used to diagnose pheochromocytoma.
Metanephrines and Normetanephrines are elevated in catecholamine secreting tumors like Pheochromocytomas and in tumors derived from neural crest cells like Paraganglioma and Neuroblastoma. Following patients with or without hypertension should be investigated for Pheochromocytoma: Previous history of tumor, Adrenal incidentaloma and Hereditary predisposition.
