CD34

CD34 is a glycoprotein mainly found on the surface of stem cells and certain types of blood cells. The CD34 test is a diagnostic tool used to detect the presence of CD34 antigen on hematopoietic stem cells and precursor cells. It is particularly important in the context of leukemia, as CD34 expression indicates an immature state of leukemic cells, aiding in the diagnosis and classification of leukemia subtypes such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). By analyzing the extent of CD34 expression, the test provides valuable information on disease aggressiveness and helps guide treatment decisions. The CD34 test is typically performed using flow cytometry on bone marrow or peripheral blood samples and plays a crucial role in evaluating and managing precursor leukemias. CD34 test is recommended when a patient shows symptoms suggestive of precursor leukemia, such as unexplained fatigue, frequent infections, or easy bleeding/bruising, for those already diagnosed with precursor leukemia to assess the stage and progression of the disease, to monitor treatment response and detect relapse in patients with precursor leukemia, or before planning a stem cell transplantation for precursor leukemia patients.
