Understanding ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA

An ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA helps to detect the antibodies that specifically target components within the cell nucleus. The nucleus of the cell houses the genetic material and is central to cellular function. Antibodies produced against the nucleus are especially important for understanding and addressing cellular activities. This test is instrumental in identifying various autoimmune disorders, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren's syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Scleroderma, and more.

An ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA involves a two step process, starting with the antinuclear antibodies (ANA) by Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA) method and progressing to subsequent evaluation using an another method called line immunoassay (LIA) to qualitatively analyze 18 specific antigens associated with autoimmune disorders.

The initial ANA IFA test provides a broad overview, detecting the presence of antinuclear antibodies in the blood sample. If this test is positive, then further testing following the reflex mechanism directs the analysis to a detailed examination of 18 antigens, collectively called Extractable Nuclear Antigens (ENA). These antigens are important biomarkers for autoimmune diseases such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) etc. However, if ANA IFA test is negative then further testing of ANA/ ENA 18 Antigens by LIA method will not be done and only ANA IFA report shall be released.

By identifying specific antibodies associated with various autoimmune disorders, an ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA helps in categorizing and understanding the nature of the autoimmune response in an individual’s body.

An ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA  is typically suggested when a doctor suspects an autoimmune disorder due to symptoms such as joint pain, fatigue, skin rashes, or inflammation. Also, it may be advised if there are risk factors such as aging, obesity and a family history of autoimmune diseases.

Generally, no special preparations are needed for this test. However, it's advised to inform your doctor about any medications or supplements that you are taking, as certain medications may affect the test results. Additionally, telling a detailed medical history and discussing symptoms can help the doctor correlate the clinical and laboratory findings.

The test results may vary depending on various factors like age, medical history, and certain risk factors among others. Abnormal test results require an expert interpretation; therefore, never try to self-medicate at home based solely on these results, and always consult a doctor for a proper understanding of the test results. The insights from this test helps the doctor tailor appropriate treatment plan.

What does ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA measure?

Contains 2 tests

An ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA offers initial screening of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) that are associated with autoimmune disorders. These antibodies, different from typical ones that fight off invaders in the body, can attach to structures inside cell nuclei. If ANAs are present in the blood, it may suggest that your immune system is overly sensitive, causing inflammation against your own tissues and possibly indicating autoimmune diseases. An ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA examines 18 different antigens, helping identify patterns related to autoimmune diseases. This comprehensive test helps in the diagnosis of conditions like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, or other autoimmune disorders by assessing the immune system’s activity and detecting the specific antibodies that may indicate an autoimmune response.

An Anti-Nuclear Antibody (ANA) by IFA - End Point Titer test checks for antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in your blood. These antibodies, different from typical ones that fight off invaders in the body, can attach to structures inside the body’s own cell nuclei. If ANAs are present in the blood, it may suggest that your immune system is overly sensitive, causing inflammation against your own tissues and possibly indicating autoimmune diseases.

The ANA / ENA 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA helps screen autoantibodies in the blood of an individual. These antibodies react with proteins present inside the nucleus of the cell and cause autoimmune disorders.

The  ANA / ENA 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA examines 18 different antigens, helping identify patterns related to autoimmune diseases. This comprehensive test helps in the diagnosis of conditions like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus,Sjogren’s Syndrome, mixed connective tissue disorders or other autoimmune disorders by assessing the immune system’s activity and detecting the specific antibodies that may indicate an autoimmune response.

FAQs related to ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA

An ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA helps detect specific antibodies in your blood, helping in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases such as lupus and others.
An ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA is a simple blood test. Initially, blood is drawn and testing for ANA by IFA method is done. If the results are positive for this test, then it may be followed by the ANA/ ENA blot 18 antigen profile test for a more detailed analysis.
No, there is no risk associated with an ANA IFA Reflex to ANA / ENA Blot 18 Antigens (Qualitative) Profile Blot / LIA. However, some individuals may feel a slight sting when a needle is pricked and experience some bleeding that is normal and usually not bothersome. Rarely, some individuals may also experience slight swelling or bruising at the site of the needle prick. Applying ice 3-4 times a day for about a week may help reduce swelling and bruising. If it does not get better, consult your doctor.
A positive result suggests immune system activity but does not pinpoint a particular disease. Further clinical and laboratory assessments are required for a precise diagnosis.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation of the joints, leading to pain, swelling, and potential joint damage.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks various organs and tissues, causing inflammation and a range of symptoms such as joint pain, skin rashes, and fatigue.
