The HIV-1 RNA Viral Load by GeneXpert test measures HIV-1 virus levels in blood to monitor infection severity and treatment effectiveness. It includes HIV-1 Viral Load (Quantitative), HIV-1 Viral Load (IU/mL), and Log Value,helping doctors assess viral activity and manage HIV infection effectively. The HIV-1 RNA Viral Load by GeneXpert test measures how much HIV is in the blood (viral load). It helps doctors decide when to start HIV medicines, check if antiretroviral therapy (ART) is working, and identify problems such as drug resistance.
This test is needed at the time of HIV diagnosis, when starting or changing antiretroviral therapy, and every 3-6 months during treatment. It can also detect HIV earlier than standard tests in some cases. This is not intended for initial HIV screening; the individual needs a confirmed diagnosis first.
No special preparation is needed for this test. However, it is important to complete the HIV testing consent form and have pre-test counseling (Annexure - CR/01) before giving the sample.
