Understanding BMD Three Sites
What is BMD Three Sites?
A bone mineral density (BMD) test measures minerals, especially calcium, in the bones (thigh-bone/spine/forearm). The BMD test uses a minute dose of ionizing radiation to calculate bone mineral content and density. This test detects osteoporosis and the risk of bone fractures. Common symptoms of osteoporosis include back pain, loss of height over time, stooped posture and brittle bones.
A score between +1 and −1 is considered healthy. Values lower than -2.5 are termed as osteoporosis and include a higher risk of fracture. It is a relatively safe and painless test which helps in detecting secondary osteoporosis caused by certain diseases and deficiencies which can be reversed through treatment.
