Overview of Dual Marker

Test Description

It is a simple blood test performed during the 11th and 13th week of pregnancy; to measure the levels of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) and Pregnancy associated plasma protein (PAPP-A ) in the mother’s blood. You should get this test done if you are pregnant or if you are pregnant and over 35 years of age. It helps in predicting the chances of your child of developing Down’s syndrome or other chromosomal disorders. It is usually read in conjunction with other tests like latest ultrasound.

Why Get Tested

  1. If you are pregnant and above 35 years
  2. If you have a family history of a child with Down's syndrome 
  3. Ideally, it is recommended that all pregnant women shoold get this test done in the first trimester (usually between 11-13 weeks) as a screening test against chromosomal disorders 

Precautions

  • Please keep the hard copy of your latest pregnancy ultrasound report ready at the time of your test..

What Results of Dual Marker mean?

Interpretations

  • Screen positive - High risk for chromosomal disorders like Down's syndrome, Trisomy 18 and trisomy 13
  • Screen negative - Low risk for chromosomal disorders like Down's syndrome, trisomy 18 and trisomy 13
  • The results of this test are usually interpreted in conjunction with maternal, fetal age and Ultrasound findings
