Alpha-1 Antitrypsin

Alpha-1-Antitrypsin (AAT) blood test is used to diagnose Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD). Alpha-1-Antitrypsin protein is produced in the liver, and protects the lungs against certain infections. The symptoms of AATD are associated with lung and liver diseases, with signs like breathing difficulty, sudden weight loss, fatigue, recurrent respiratory infections, pale skin, elevated liver enzymes, abdominal swelling, and jaundice.

AATD is an inherited disorder. The AAT protein is produced with the help of a specific gene. If the gene is mutated, it causes AATD and related complications. In healthy adults, the normal plasma concentration of AAT ranges from 80 mg/dL to 220 mg/dL. A person with severe AAT deficiency has roughly around 60 mg/dL of the protein.
