What is CECT Knee Joints?

Contrast Enhanced Computerized Tomography (CECT) scan of the Knee Joint is a diagnostic procedure where rotating beams of X-rays are used to create cross sectional images of the knee. These cross sectional images can then be used to create a complete three dimensional image of the knee joint. This image can be used to visibly identify damage or other conditions of the joint and other soft tissues nearby.

Why is CECT Knee Joints done?

  1. To locate and diagnose the fractures of the bones forming the knee joint
  2. To assess articulation or movement of the knee joint
  3. To detect congenital anomalies (birth defects)
  4. To detect inflammation or infection and help diagnose arthritis
  5. To detect any damage of the connective tissues of this joint

Preparation for CECT Knee Joints

  • Pregnant women should inform their doctor (and x-ray technician) as the radiations may affect the fetus. If needed, precautions can be taken to lower the radiation exposure to the fetus.
  • Get the blood urea and creatinine test done to evaluate kidney function and to ensure safety of contrast before taking up the procedure.
  • Depending on the area to be imaged, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown at the time of the scan.
