Lipisar 40 mg/10 mg Tablet

Overview

Introduction

Lipisar 40 mg/10 mg Tablet is a combination of two medicines used to treat high blood pressure with high cholesterol levels. Lowering the blood pressure helps in preventing future heart attack and stroke.

Lipisar 40 mg/10 mg Tablet can be taken with or without food. You should take it regularly at evenly spaced intervals as per the schedule prescribed by your doctor. Taking it at the same time every day will help you remember to take it. The dose and duration of treatment will depend on what you are being treated for. Do not stop taking it until you have finished the complete course, even when you feel better. You can help this medicine work better by making a few changes to your lifestyle such as keeping active, stopping smoking, and eating a low salt and low-fat diet.

Nausea, stomach pain, constipation, headache, and muscle pain are some common side effects of this medicine.  It may also cause sleepiness and dizziness, do not drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how it affects you. Talk to your doctor if any of the side effects bother you or do not go away. It is advised to avoid potassium rich food while taking this medicine. You may be asked for regular monitoring of blood pressure, blood sugar level, and electrolytes level while taking this medicine.

Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you have any kidney or liver problems or severe dehydration. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult their doctor before taking it.  You should also let your healthcare team know all other medicines you are taking as they may affect, or be affected by this medicine.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Stomach pain
Try to get plenty of rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may relieve the stomach pain. It may help if you eat and drink slowly and have smaller and more frequent meals. Reduce your intake of coffee, tea and alcohol as these can make the pain worse. If you are in a lot of pain, speak to your doctor about possible medication. Your doctor may be able to prescribe some over-the-counter medicines to help reduce the pain.
  • Coping with Constipation
Try to eat foods which are high in fiber such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals to increase the bulk and consistency of bowel movements. Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic drinks and stay hydrated to promote healthy digestion. Increasing physical activities such as walking, yoga and regular exercise can also be helpful. If your condition does not improve, you can ask your doctor to prescribe you laxative medicine.
  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Dizziness
This is usually short-lived and should go away within a few days. If this happens, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Lying still in a dark, quiet room may help reduce the spinning feeling. Sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows. Get up slowly from a lying or sitting position. Get plenty of rest and try to relax as being anxious can make it worse. Try taking this medicine at bedtime to reduce the symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and ginger tea may also help. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking as it will make you feel worse. Avoid driving or using tools or machinery until you feel better.
  • Coping with Muscle pain
Tell your doctor straight away because sometimes the muscle pain may be a sign of something more serious. A lower dosage or a different medication might be needed. Try to relax the cramping muscle by stretching it and holding the stretch. You might massage the muscle or apply a heat pad to the area after stretching. Avoid exercising too much. Stay well-hydrated. Do not take over-the-counter pain relievers unless the doctor prescribes it. Your doctor may also suggest taking supplements, such as calcium, magnesium oxide or potassium oxide depending on your needs.
  • Coping with Weakness
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Eat a well-balanced diet to keep your energy levels up. Do not drink too much alcohol. Do not drive or use tools or machinery until you feel better. Other things that can help include doing some gentle exercise every day, prioritizing and pacing your activities and having a short nap if you need to. If you are still having problems after a week, speak to your doctor, as they may want to change you to a different type of medicine.
  • Coping with Increased glucose level in blood
You may only know this after having a blood test. High levels of sugar in your blood can cause diabetes and lead to serious complications. You can help yourself by sticking to a healthy diet, taking regular exercise, and drinking plenty of sugar-free fluids. Avoid foods which cause your blood sugar to rise quickly (such as cakes, pastries and biscuits) and limit the amount of alcohol you drink. If it does not improve, there may be some medicines that can help to lower your blood sugar level. Your doctor may monitor your blood sugar level regularly while you are taking this medicine and guide you accordingly.
  • Coping with Increased potassium level in blood
You will need a blood test to find out if your blood platelet level is low. If this medicine is causing your platelet levels to drop, your doctor may suggest an alternative medicine. There are also medicines that can boost your blood platelet level. Consider asking your doctor about this. A low platelet count can put you at risk for bleeding. Try to be careful when doing activities that might cause an injury or a cut as it may take longer to stop bleeding.
  • Coping with Increased liver enzymes
There may be no symptoms, so your doctor should carry out a blood test and give you advice. Some lifestyle changes can bring down levels of liver enzymes. In general, you will need to stop drinking alcohol or limit the amount you drink, lose weight and keep active. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Eat a healthy diet. Some particular foods like nuts, fatty fish, coffee, tea, olive oil, sprouts and bananas may be beneficial. Try to control stress as this can make your symptoms worse.

How to use Lipisar Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Lipisar 40 mg/10 mg Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Lipisar Tablet works

Lipisar 40 mg/10 mg Tablet is a combination of two medicines: Telmisartan and Atorvastatin which treat high blood pressure and cholesterol. Telmisartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking the hormone angiotensin thereby relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. Atorvastatin is a lipid-lowering medication (statin). It works by blocking an enzyme (HMG-CoA-reductase) that is required in the body to make cholesterol. It thus lowers "bad" cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and raises "good" cholesterol (HDL).
