Equirex Tablet

Overview

Introduction

Equirex Tablet is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and diarrhea or constipation). It prevents the sudden spasm of muscles to relieve stomach pain and cramps. It also promotes easy passage of gas to reduce stomach discomfort.

Equirex Tablet is taken without food in a dose and duration as advised by the doctor. The dose you are given will depend on your condition and how you respond to the medicine. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen. Let your healthcare team know about all other medications you are taking as some may affect, or be affected by this medicine.

The most common side effects are nausea, constipation, memory impairment, blurred vision, dryness in mouth, difficulty in urination, and coordination impaired. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Contact your doctor straight away if you are at all concerned about any of these side effects. It may also cause dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it can worsen your sleepiness.

Lifestyle modifications like having fiber-rich diet, avoiding foods that trigger your symptoms, increasing fluid intake and regular exercise can help you to get better results. Before taking it, you should tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver diseases. You should also tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Sleepiness
If the medicine is making you drowsy during the day, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. You can also consider taking a nap. Physical exercises such as walking may be helpful. Do not drink alcohol, as it will make you feel more tired. Avoid driving or operating heavy equipment when you are feeling drowsy. This problem usually goes away as your body gets used to the medicine. However, if it does not, ask your doctor if you can take your medicine at bedtime or whether the dose can be reduced.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Constipation
Try to eat foods which are high in fiber such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals to increase the bulk and consistency of bowel movements. Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic drinks and stay hydrated to promote healthy digestion. Increasing physical activities such as walking, yoga and regular exercise can also be helpful. If your condition does not improve, you can ask your doctor to prescribe you laxative medicine.
  • Coping with Memory impairment
There is a lot you can do to improve your memory. Keep active and take regular exercise to improve blood flow to your whole body, including your brain. Eat a healthy diet so your brain gets the nutrients it needs. Some foods containing omega-3 fatty acids (such as oily fish) may benefit brain health. Keep mentally active. It is important to socialize, so stay in contact with friends and family. Stay organised – keep a diary for things you have to do, keep things you need regularly (such as keys, purse and spectacles) in a set place and do not try to do too many things at once. Make sure you get good sleep, make it a priority. Drinking alcohol can lead to confusion and memory loss, so try to cut down or stop. Also, stop smoking because it reduces the amount of oxygen that gets to your brain. If you are worried about memory loss, talk to your doctor, especially if it affects your ability to live your daily life.
  • Coping with Dizziness
This is usually short-lived and should go away within a few days. If this happens, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Lying still in a dark, quiet room may help reduce the spinning feeling. Sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows. Get up slowly from a lying or sitting position. Get plenty of rest and try to relax as being anxious can make it worse. Try taking this medicine at bedtime to reduce the symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and ginger tea may also help. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking as it will make you feel worse. Avoid driving or using tools or machinery until you feel better.
  • Coping with Blurred vision
You can consider washing your eyes with water. Avoid driving or using tools or machines if your vision is impaired. Do not take your next dose if your vision is still blurry. If it gets worse or does not improve, ask your doctor to recommend eye drops or talk about changing your medications.
  • Coping with Dryness in mouth
Keep a drink available that you can sip through the day. Rinse your mouth with warm salted water and chew sugarless gum or hard candy. Try breathing through your nose more often than your mouth. Avoid caffeinated beverages, smoking and alcohol because they can make your condition worse. Use lip balm if your lips are also dry. Try to avoid foods that are acidic (like lemons), spicy, salty or sugary. If this side effect bothers you or does not go away, talk to your doctor about artificial saliva products or other suitable treatments.
  • Coping with Difficulty in urination
Relax when you try to pee. Don't try to force the flow of urine. If it doesn't happen, try again later. Limit drinks that increase urination such as coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages. Continue to drink plenty of water each day. Gentle massage and hot compression on your lower abdomen can help relax your muscles and may improve your urine flow. Doing exercises that strengthen the bladder muscles such as pelvic exercise will be of help. Distract your attention by thinking about something else. Avoid alcohol and smoking because both can aggravate the condition. Talk to your doctor urgently if you can not pee at all.
  • Coping with Impaired coordination
If you feel unsteady, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Try getting up very slowly from a sitting or lying position. If your condition does not improve, talk with your doctor about changing the dose or trying an alternative medicine.
  • Coping with Depression
It is important to talk to your doctor if you think you may be depressed. The sooner you do this, the sooner you can recover. Treatment for depression can involve a combination of lifestyle changes, talking therapies (such as counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy) and medicines (antidepressants). There are many things you can do for yourself if your depression is not too severe. Exercise is an extremely effective treatment for depression, so make sure you keep as active as possible. It can really lift your mood. A healthy diet can also make a big difference to your mood (as well as improving your physical health). Mindfulness is a technique that many people find helpful. It may be tempting to smoke or drink alcohol, but both will make things worse in the long run. Try talking to a friend or family member even if you do not feel comfortable doing this. Get into a routine with regular sleep patterns and meals. If you have thoughts of self-harm or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.

How Equirex Tablet works

Equirex Tablet is a combination of two medicines: Chlordiazepoxide and Clidinium. Chlordiazepoxide is a benzodiazepine. It works by increasing the action of GABA, a chemical messenger which suppresses the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain. Clidinium works by relaxing the muscles in your stomach and gut (intestine). It stops sudden muscle contractions (spasms) which in turn relieves cramps, pain, bloating, and discomfort.
