Know more about this test

The MUSK Antibody test helps detect the presence of antibodies produced by the immune system that mistakenly attack proteins called muscle-specific receptor tyrosine kinase. This test can be done to diagnose myasthenia gravis (MG), an autoimmune neurological condition in which antibodies destroy the communication between nerves and muscle, resulting in muscle weakness and fatigue.

Understanding MUSK Antibody

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness in skeletal muscles, the muscles the body uses for movement. In MG, the immune system produces antibodies that mistakenly attack components at the neuromuscular junction, which interfere with communication between nerves and muscles.

The MUSK Antibody test checks for antibodies targeting a protein called muscle-specific kinase (MUSK). This protein plays a key role in forming and maintaining the neuromuscular junction. Most individuals with myasthenia gravis (MG) have antibodies directed against acetylcholine receptors (AChR). However, in about 10% to 15% of MG cases, AChR antibodies are not detected. In such situations, doctors may recommend the MUSK Antibody test to help confirm the diagnosis and classify the specific subtype of MG.

Doctors may also recommend this test if an individual shows symptoms like drooping eyelids (ptosis), difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, facial muscle weakness, trouble breathing, especially when AChR antibody results are negative but MG is still suspected.

No special preparation is needed before taking this test. However, a brief clinical history is preferred for getting tested. Additionally, it informs the doctor about any medications being taken or any recent infections, as these can affect results.

Test result ranges are approximate and may differ slightly between labs depending on the methodology and laboratory guidelines. Do not self-medicate, and always consult a doctor to understand the test results correctly.

Please note: This is an outsourced test. The sample for this test is collected by TATA 1MG and processed at a NABL accredited partnered lab.

What does MUSK Antibody measure?

The MUSK Antibody test measures the presence of autoantibodies that target the muscle-specific kinase (MUSK) protein in the blood. These antibodies interfere with signals between nerves and muscles, causing weakness. A positive result confirms the autoimmune basis of the condition and identifies a specific MG subtype. This helps doctors tailor treatment, often involving immunotherapy, specialized approaches, etc.

FAQs related to MUSK Antibody

The MUSK Antibody test detects the presence of antibodies against muscle-specific kinase (MUSK), which can help diagnose a type of myasthenia gravis, especially when AChR antibodies are not found.
This test is recommended if a person has symptoms of myasthenia gravis but tests negative for AChR antibodies. It helps confirm the diagnosis and guides the appropriate treatment plan.
Doctors may suggest this test if you have muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, facial weakness, or trouble breathing, especially if AChR test results are negative.
No, fasting is not required for the MUSK Antibody test.
A phlebotomist will clean your skin using an antiseptic alcohol cotton swab or wipe and take blood samples from your vein using a needle. The blood sample will be stored safely and transported to the laboratory for analysis.
A positive result means that MUSK antibodies are present in your blood, indicating that your muscle weakness may be due to myasthenia gravis of the MUSK-positive subtype.
A negative MuSK antibody result means no antibodies were detected against the MuSK protein. This does not completely rule out Myasthenia Gravis , some people may have antibodies against other targets (such as acetylcholine receptor [AChR] antibodies) or may be seronegative MG (no detectable antibodies). Your doctor may order additional tests or an electromyography (EMG) study for further evaluation.
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is caused by antibodies that block or destroy receptors at the muscle-nerve junction, preventing muscles from receiving signals properly. It is often linked to antibodies against acetylcholine receptors (AChR) or muscle-specific kinase (MUSK).
MG can vary from person to person. Some people have mild symptoms that remain stable, while others may experience worsening muscle weakness over time. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve outcomes.
There is no permanent cure for MG, but symptoms can be managed effectively with medications, lifestyle changes, and sometimes surgery (like thymectomy) as per the doctor’s consultation.
