Growth Hormone
The Growth Hormone test is a blood test that measures the level of growth hormone (GH) which is produced by the pituitary gland and helps regulate growth, metabolism and overall body composition. This test helps diagnose GH-related disorders such as Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD), Acromegaly, Gigantism, pituitary tumors etc.
Understanding Growth Hormone
Growth hormone (GH), produced by the pituitary gland. It is essential for regulating growth during childhood and for maintaining the function of tissues and organs throughout life. It is normally released into the bloodstream in pulses throughout the day and night with peaks that occur mostly during the night.
When there is an overproduction of growth hormone in children, it can lead to a condition known as Acromegaly or Gigantism, characterized by excessive growth. This results in individuals becoming unusually tall with enlarged hands and feet, changes in facial features, and the enlargement of internal organs. Conversely, insufficient growth hormone production in children can lead to stunted growth, with long-term effects such as a higher risk of heart disease, weakened bones and muscles, and overall developmental challenges.
The Growth Hormone test is often used to diagnose conditions caused by GH deficiency or excess. Deficiency of GH can cause a lowered production of pituitary hormones (hypopituitarism). Excess GH can be due to a pituitary tumor (usually benign) that produces GH.It helps assess pituitary gland function, identify underlying conditions and monitor treatment response.
An overnight fasting for 8-12 hours is required. However, drinking water is acceptable. Make sure to be at complete rest for 30 minutes prior to sample collection. Inform your doctor about all the medications or supplements that you may be taking as well as your medical history as these factors could potentially affect the test results.
Lab test results may vary across laboratories. Interpretation of the test results requires expert guidance. Therefore, do not self-medicate and talk to your doctor to understand your test results correctly. The insights from Growth Hormone test helps doctors determine your medical condition, make recommendations for lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, prescribe medication if required to manage your condition, and formulate your overall treatment plan.
What does Growth Hormone measure?
The Growth Hormone test measures the concentration of growth hormone (GH) in the blood, which reflects its secretion from the pituitary gland. Unlike many hormones that remain stable, GH levels can fluctuate significantly throughout the day, influenced by factors such as sleep, physical activity, and stress.
This test evaluates the adequacy of growth hormone production, which is essential for normal growth and development in children. In adults, appropriate GH levels are crucial for maintaining healthy body composition, regulating fat metabolism, and preserving muscle mass. Abnormal GH levels can indicate various health conditions, making this test vital for diagnosing and managing disorders related to growth hormone imbalance.
