Understanding BMD Whole Body
What is BMD Whole Body?
A bone mineral density (BMD) whole body tests bone health. BMD (Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry/DEXA) uses a minute radiation dose to analyse fat, muscle, bone and water mass. Two X-ray beams with differing energy levels are passed through the bones. BMD is calculated based on the absorption of each beam by the bone. This test detects osteoporosis and the risk for bone fractures. The symptoms of bone damages are back pain, loss of height over time, stooped posture and brittle bones.
The lower BMD value indicates a higher risk of fracture. A score between +1 and −1 is considered healthy. A score of -1 to -2.5 indicates low bone density. Values lower than -2.5 are termed osteoporosis. It is a relatively safe and painless test.
