What is MRI Fistulogram?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for Fistulogram is an imaging technique to create an image of the sphincter muscles, the anal canal, and its surrounding soft tissues. A fistula is an abnormal connection or passageway that connects two organs or vessels that usually do not connect. The fistula can develop anywhere between the vagina and the rectum, or intestine and skin but the most common location of the fistula is around the anus. The common symptoms of fistula are redness and swelling around the anus, inflammation of the vagina, and skin irritation around the anus.
An MRI fistulogram is the best option for the diagnosis of anal fistula. However, the scan is also used for the diagnosis of anovaginal and rectovaginal fistulas.
Antibiotics or other medication may also be used to treat any infection associated with the fistula. However, there are no pharmaceutical solutions to irradicate fistula.
Why is MRI Fistulogram done?
- To diagnose perianal fistulae (mass which develops between bowel end and anus skin)
- To find out the Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns disease) and obstetric fistula (condition in which a hole develops in the birth canal after child delivery)
- To detect blind (one end opening), complete (both end opening) and incomplete (external skin opening) fistula
- To evaluate an obstetric fistula (which develops when blood supply vagina, bladder and rectum is cut off at prolonged delayed labour delivery
