Uses

Dutasteride is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

How it works

Dutasteride blocks an enzyme which is necessary to change testosterone to another hormone that causes prostate to grow. As a result, it helps to shrink the prostate and relieve the symptoms like difficulty in passing urine. Dutasteride is can also be used in hair loss to stimulate hair growth.

Expert advice

Do not start or continue furosemide and consult your doctor:
  • If you have liver disease.
  • If you have to undergo prostate specific antigen assay.
  • If you notice breast enlargement and tenderness.
  • If a woman comes in contact with leaking dutasteride capsules she should Wash  the affected area immediately with soap and water.
Use a condom during sexual intercourse. Do not donate blood while taking dutasteride and for at least 6 months after your treatment ends. Dutasteride can be carried in the blood and could cause birth defects, if a pregnant women receives a transfusion with blood that contains dutasteride. Consult your doctor if you notice an unusual rash, swelling in your mouth, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.
