Vasavaleha

Vasavaleha
Vasavaleha is a semi-solid herbal formulation. It provides relief from respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and chronic cough[1]. It is an excellent expectorant helpful in respiratory illness as it makes the sticky phlegm dissolve and aids in its easy exit. It helps reduce the inflammation from the lungs thus providing relief from asthma attacks.

According to Ayurveda, Vasavaleha can help with Swas Roga (respiratory illness) due to its Kapha balancing property. This property helps remove excess mucus from the lungs, providing relief from the symptoms of asthma. Vasavaleha also has Vata balancing properties, together these properties help remove dryness and release sputum out of the respiratory tract. This action provides aid in bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and allergic rhinitis.

You can take 2.5-5gm Vasavaleha or as directed by the physician to get relief from the symptoms of asthma. Mix with honey, warm water or milk. Have it after eating light food once or twice a day.

Vasavaleha is generally well tolerated and does not have any side effects when taken in the recommended dose. However, it is advisable to consult the doctor before using Vasavaleha.

Benefits of Vasavaleha

1. Asthma
Asthma is an inflammatory condition in which the airways to the lungs narrow and swell. It can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing. According to Ayurveda, the main doshas involved in asthma are Vata and Kapha. The vitiated ‘Vata’ combines with deranged ‘Kapha dosha’ in the lungs causing obstruction in the respiratory passage. This results in difficulty in breathing. This condition is known as Swas Roga (asthma). Vasavaleha can help control the symptoms of asthma and gives relief in case of breathlessness. Taking Vasavaleha helps to balance Kapha and remove excess mucus from the lungs. This gives relief from the symptoms of asthma.

2. Cough
A cough is a common ailment that usually happens with a cold. A cough is generally caused by the accumulation of mucus in the respiratory tract. It is commonly known as Kapha disorder in Ayurveda. Vasavaleha is one of the best Ayurvedic remedies to control cough associated with the common cold. It provides the most benefits when taken daily. Taking Vasavaleha with honey helps to balance Kapha and rejuvenates the lungs. This is due to its Rasayana (rejuvenating) property.

3. Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a condition in which there is an inflammation in the windpipe and the bronchi (branches) of the lungs which results in the accumulation of sputum. In Ayurveda, this disease is known as Kasa Roga. It is caused due to an imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas. When Vata dosha gets imbalanced, it blocks the Kapha dosha in the respiratory tract (windpipe) resulting in the accumulation of sputum. This condition further results in congestion in the respiratory tract that obstructs the air pathway.
Vasavaleha is an Ayurvedic preparation that can help remove dryness and release sputum out of the respiratory tract. This is due to its Vata and Kapha balancing properties. It also helps boost immunity due to its Rasayana (rejuvenating) property, providing extra aid in fighting infections.

4. Chronic Inflammatory Lung Disease
Chronic Inflammatory Lung Disease causes difficulty in breathing. It is commonly termed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is a chronic disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. According to Ayurveda, COPD is caused due to an imbalance of all the three doshas (Kapha, Vata, and Pitta). It is the Kapha dosha which mainly gets affected and causes an obstruction in the windpipe, thus creating breathing difficulties. Vasavaleha is one of the effective formulations that is given in this condition due to its Kapha and Vata balancing properties. It makes breathing easier due to its bronchodilator property.

5. Allergic rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis is also called hay fever. It is an allergic reaction that causes sneezing, congestion, an itchy nose, and a sore throat. According to Ayurveda, allergic rhinitis is known as Vata-Kaphaj Pratishyaya which is caused due to impaired digestion and imbalance of Vata and Kapha. Taking Vasavaleha helps fight the symptoms of allergic rhinitis as it has Kapha and Vata balancing properties.
