Understanding Sinogram/Fistulogram
What is Sinogram/Fistulogram?
Sinogram/Fistulogram is an imaging technique to visualize a fistula/ sinus, which is an abnormal passage in the body. A fistula is an abnormal connecting tube connecting two organs; while a sinus is an abnormal track or cavity that opens to the skin. Fistulogram is advised to detect fistulas in two loops of intestine, the anal canaland skin near the anus, the vagina and another body part such as the colon, rectum, small intestine or bladder. Sinogram helps to asess the cause and extent of problems such as discharge of
clear fluid from the skin, or more serious, such as abscess formation
What is Sinogram/Fistulogram used for?
- To understand the size and extent of a sinus (an abnormal passage that starts or ends in one opening, usually on the skin)
- To study any proliferations arising from a single sinus
- To guide the treatment plan for sinuses
