Sigmoidoscopy

The Sigmoidoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic test used to examine the inner lining of the rectum and the lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon) for abnormalities such as polyps, inflammation, bleeding, or signs of colorectal cancer. This test uses a flexible, lighted tube called a sigmoidoscope, which is gently inserted through the rectum to provide real-time visual images of the bowel lining. Sigmoidoscopy is commonly recommended for evaluating symptoms such as rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits. It may also be used as a screening tool for colorectal disease. This test examines only the lower colon, which makes its preparation simpler than for a full colonoscopy. If abnormal findings are detected, a full colonoscopy may be recommended for further evaluation or treatment.
