The multiple myeloma comprehensive panel test includes several components: Serum Protein Electrophoresis (SPEP), Serum Immunofixation Electrophoresis (SIFE), Immunoglobulin Profile (IgG, IgA, and IgM), Free Light-chain assay, and Beta-2 Microglobulin. SPEP identifies abnormal protein levels in the blood, while SIFE further characterizes the specific type of abnormal proteins. The Immunoglobulin Profile determines the levels of different immunoglobulins. The Free Light-chain assay quantifies light chains produced by myeloma cells. Beta-2 Microglobulin is a marker of disease burden. These tests aid in diagnosing multiple myeloma, assessing disease stage, and monitoring response to treatment, enabling personalized and effective management of patients with multiple myeloma.

The Protein Electrophoresis, Serum test measures the concentration and distribution of specific proteins (like albumin, alpha globulins, beta globulins, and gamma globulins) in the blood. Each of these plays a vital role in bodily functions. This test aids in the detection of abnormal proteins, particularly monoclonal (M) proteins. The presence of M proteins may indicate plasma cell disorders such as multiple myeloma (a blood cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow). Also, this test helps diagnose and monitor various blood disorders.
