Cobalt, Urine

The Cobalt, Urine test measures the amount of cobalt in the urine sample. Cobalt is a trace element that is a key component of vitamin B12, necessary for the production of red blood cells and the maintenance of healthy nerve function. It enters the body primarily through food sources, and  from environmental exposure or medical devices, such as hip implants made from cobalt alloys.

The Cobalt, Urine test is used to identify cobalt toxicity (excess cobalt) or deficiency in the body. It may be advised when there are symptoms indicative of cobalt imbalance in the body, such as headache, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, joint pain, dizziness, or neurological symptoms like memory loss or tingling in the hands and feet. This test is particularly relevant for individuals who have received cobalt-containing medical devices, such as metal-on-metal hip implants. The test is also recommended for individuals working in industries where cobalt exposure is common, such as mining, manufacturing, and welding. Additionally, the test may be used to monitor patients undergoing treatment for conditions that affect cobalt metabolism. 

This test is done by a highly specialised Mass Spectrometric technique (ICP-MS) that can measure elements at trace levels in body fluids.
