What is Shingrix Vaccine?

The Shingrix Vaccine is a recombinant zoster vaccine designed to prevent herpes zoster (shingles), a painful blistering rash that typically affects one side of the body following a nerve pathway, and can lead to long-term nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia). It works by stimulating the immune system to produce a strong response against the VZV, which helps prevent the reactivation of the virus. It is essential to take the vaccine doses per the doctor's advice for adequate protection against the disease.

Note: Shingrix vaccine is not used to prevent chickenpox

To be administered intramuscularly by a trained healthcare professional. Kindly do not self-administer. For adults aged 50 and above, two vaccine doses are recommended, with the first dose administered at month 0 and the second dose given 2 to 6 months later. For immunodeficient/ immunosuppressed individuals, consider accelerated vaccination schedule: 2 doses, 1-2 months apart, starting at month 0.

Are there any side effects associated with Shingrix vaccination?

Shingrix vaccination is generally well tolerated; however, temporary side effects are common. The most frequently reported reactions include pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site, as well as fatigue, muscle pain, headache, shivering, fever, stomach pain, and nausea. These side effects typically appear within a few days after vaccination and usually resolve within 2–3 days without treatment.

Who should get vaccinated?

The vaccine is suitable for adults aged 50 and older and for adults aged 18 years and older who are or will be at increased risk of herpes zoster due to immunodeficiency or immunosuppression caused by known disease or therapy.

Are there any contraindications for Shingrix vaccination?

Shingrix vaccination is contraindicated in individuals who have experienced a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of the vaccine or to any of its components. Vaccination should be postponed in individuals with an active shingles (herpes zoster) infection until the illness has resolved. It may also be deferred in people with a moderate or severe acute illness, particularly if accompanied by a high fever. Additionally, Shingrix is generally not recommended during pregnancy.

Is there any specific preparation needed before getting the Shingrix vaccination?

Shingrix vaccination can be taken at any time of the day, and there are no specific requirements such as fasting or post-meal administration.

What precautions should be observed after receiving the Shingrix vaccine?

Shingrix is generally well tolerated and does not disrupt your daily activities, including food, travel and medication use. However, if you have any concerns or specific health conditions, it's advisable to discuss them with your healthcare provider before vaccination.

Can I get vaccinated if I had chickenpox?

Yes, you can get vaccinated against herpes zoster (Shingles) even if you had chickenpox as history of chickenpox is not a contraindication. However, Shingrix vaccine is not indicated for prevention of primary varicella infection (chickenpox).

Can I get Shingrix if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Shingrix is not recommended during pregnancy as safety data are limited. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
