What is Prevenar 20 Vaccine? 

Prevenar 20 is a 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20) that helps protect against infections caused by 20 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. These bacteria can live in the nose and throat without causing illness. However, in some people, they can cause pneumococcal disease, including serious infections such as pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections. 

Prevenar 20 is a non-live vaccine. It contains purified components from 20 pneumococcal types linked to a carrier protein. This helps the immune system recognise the bacteria and build a protective response without exposing you to live pneumococcal bacteria. The vaccine helps prevent pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease caused by the types it covers. 

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

Prevenar 20 is approved in India for adults aged 18 years and older.

Pneumococcal vaccination may be particularly important for older adults and people with conditions that increase their risk of serious infection, including:

• Chronic lung conditions, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or asthma.
• Diabetes or chronic heart, kidney or liver disease.
• Weakened immunity due to conditions such as HIV, certain cancers or immunosuppressive treatment.
• Cigarette smoking.

Administration (For Adults Only)

Prevenar 20 is administered as a single 0.5 mL injection into a muscle, preferably in the upper arm or in the thigh muscle. It must be administered by a qualified healthcare professional. Do not self-administer.
