What is MRI Perfusion?
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan test uses strong magnetic and radio waves to create detailed and clear 3D images. The MRI Perfusion uses a contrast dye that is injected into a patient before having the MRI scan. Contrast agents helps to monitor the delivery of blood to tissues in the brain. It is a radiation less test which creates detailed images of tissues in the brain. These images can be stored on an electronic device which can be printed on a film. The complete procedure takes about 40-60 minutes.
Why is MRI Perfusion done?
- To diagnose ischaemic condition like cerebral infarction (dead brain tissue which results from the narrowed or blocked arteries supplying blood and oxygen to the brain
- To find out area of the brain damaged due to lack of blood supply
- To detect moya moya disease (blocked brain arteries)
