Description of Interstitial cystitis

Definition
 
Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a condition that causes discomfort or pain in the bladder and an urge to urinate frequently and urgently. It is far more common in women than in men. 
 
Signs and Symptoms
 
The symptoms vary from person to person. Some symptoms are:
1. Pain without urgency or frequency
2. Urgency and frequency without pain
3. Symptoms in women often get worse during their periods. 
4. Pain during sexual intercourse
 
Investigations
 
1. The doctor will ask you for your medical history.
2. The doctor may physically examine your external genitals and the pelvic region
3. Your doctor will recommend certain tests such as urine test
4. Biopsy
 
Treatment
 
Treatment may include:
1. Distending, or inflating, the bladder
2. Bathing the inside of the bladder with a drug solution
3. Oral medicines
4. Electrical nerve stimulation
5. Physical therapy
6. Lifestyle changes
7. Bladder training
8. In rare cases, surgery
