Thrombocytopenia in general refers to a decreased platelet count in blood. Chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenia refers to a decreased platelet count due to immune mediated processes. This occurs as a result of increased platelet destruction by the reticuloendothelial system. Spleen is the primary organ involved.
