What is the DHPPi + Anti Rabies + KC Vaccine? 

The DHPPi + Anti Rabies + KC Vaccine is a combination vaccination used for the active immunization of dogs against multiple infections.

The DHPPi vaccine contains live attenuated (weakened) strains of canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV2), canine parvovirus, and canine parainfluenza virus, while also protecting against canine infectious hepatitis caused by canine adenovirus type 2. The Anti Rabies vaccine contains inactivated rabies virus and the KC (Kennel Cough) vaccine contains live attenuated (weakened) strains of Bordetella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus.

These vaccines stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies against these viruses and bacteria without causing the disease. In the future, when your dog is exposed to them, these antibodies mount an immune response, helping reduce the severity of the infection.

The DHPPi + Anti Rabies + KC Vaccine offers protection from several diseases:

Canine Distemper: It is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous disorders. The symptoms may include fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, low appetite, and seizures.

Canine Parvovirus: It affects the gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms like bloody diarrhea, severe vomiting, appetite loss, and weakness. Parvovirus is highly infectious and is often fatal.

Canine Respiratory Diseases: The vaccine provides protection against respiratory diseases like parainfluenza or kennel cough caused by parainfluenza virus and canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV2). Common symptoms of these diseases may include cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, breathing difficulty, and fever.

Canine Infectious Hepatitis: It is caused by the canine adenovirus type 1 and can lead to liver disease. This may lead to symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, discharge from the eyes or nose, and bleeding. 

Rabies: Rabies is a serious viral disease that attacks the nervous system and can also infect humans. It is usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. Symptoms may include aggression, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, weakness, fever, anxiety, and paralysis.

Kennel Cough: Kennel cough, also known as canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), is a contagious respiratory infection that spreads through airborne droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms of kennel cough may include a honking cough, gagging or retching, runny nose or eyes, decreased energy, and vomiting.

The DHPPi + Anti Rabies + KC Vaccine is suitable for dogs as recommended by the veterinarian. Vaccination schedules may vary depending on the dog’s age, vaccination history, health condition, and local veterinary guidelines.

Administration

DHPPi Vaccination Schedule:

The vaccine is administered by a subcutaneous injection. The DHPPi vaccine is generally recommended from 8–10 weeks of age, with a second dose administered 2–4 weeks later. If vaccination begins after 12 weeks of age, one dose may be given at the age of 12 weeks, followed by another dose at 14–16 weeks of age.

Annual revaccination is recommended for protection against respiratory disease caused by parainfluenza virus. For canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, canine infectious hepatitis, and respiratory disease caused by canine adenovirus type 2, revaccination every 3 years is suggested. Keep vaccinated dogs away from sources of infection like crowded places or kennels, for at least 7 days after vaccination.

Anti Rabies Vaccination Schedule:

The vaccine is administered by a subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Primary Anti Rabies vaccination is generally recommended at or above 3 months of age. In some cases, earlier vaccination may be advised, followed by a repeat dose as recommended by the veterinarian.

Revaccination is generally recommended every 3 years or according to local veterinary regulations and veterinary advice. However, in many Indian states and cities, annual rabies vaccination is legally required for pet dogs. Always follow local regulations and your veterinarian's advice.

For pets exposed to a suspected rabid animal, post-bite Anti Rabies vaccination may be administered under strict veterinary supervision. The schedule generally includes doses on:

• Day 0
• Day 3
• Day 7
• Day 14
• Day 28

Routine preventive vaccination remains important for long-term protection.

KC (Kennel Cough) Vaccination Schedule:

The vaccine is administered intranasally. Dogs should be at least 2 weeks of age to receive the KC Vaccine. If an antibiotic is administered to the dog within 1 week of vaccination, then vaccination should be repeated after the course of the antibiotic is finished.

Unvaccinated dogs should receive one dose at least 3 weeks before periods of anticipated risk, such as boarding, temporary kennelling, daycare stays, grooming visits, training sessions, or exposure to other dogs. This helps provide protection against both vaccine agents. 

However, for protection only against Bordetella bronchiseptica, vaccination can be done at least 72 hours before potential exposure to high-risk environments. 

Revaccination is generally recommended annually to help maintain continued protection against kennel cough.

Side Effects of DHPPI + Anti Rabies + KC Vaccine

The DHPPi + Anti Rabies + KC Vaccine is generally well-tolerated and does not usually cause serious side effects. In some cases, mild and temporary side effects may occur as the body responds to the vaccines. These may include:

• Swelling at the injection site
• Mild fever
• Tiredness or reduced activity
• Sneezing
• Mild coughing
• Lethargy
• Temporary eye or nasal discharge

These effects usually resolve on their own within a short duration. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur. Consult a veterinarian immediately if severe side effects appear.
