Understanding FVRCP/Tricat Vaccine for Cats (Vaccination at Home) Also referred as Tricat / FVRCP (1st dose) Tricat (2nd dose) Tricat (3rd dose)

What is the FVRCP/Tricat Vaccine for Cats?

The FVRCP/Tricat vaccine for cats is a combination vaccine designed to protect kittens and cats from three major viral infections. It contains weakened or inactivated strains of feline viral rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), calicivirus, and panleukopenia virus.

These weakened strains help stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies without causing the disease itself. If your cat is later exposed to these viruses, the immune system is better prepared to fight the infection and reduce the severity of illness.

Protection from Diseases:

The FVRCP/Tricat vaccine for cats offers protection from three infectious viral diseases:

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR): It is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by feline herpesvirus. Symptoms may include fever, eye discharge, nasal congestion, and breathing difficulty.

Calicivirus (C): It is a contagious viral infection that affects the upper respiratory tract and mouth. It may lead to symptoms like oral ulcers, sneezing, nasal discharge, and discomfort while eating.

Panleukopenia (P): Also known as feline distemper, it is a severe viral disease that affects the immune system and gastrointestinal tract. It can lower the white blood cell count and cause symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.

Suitable for:

The FVRCP/Tricat vaccine for cats is suitable for 8–9-week-old cats, as advised by the veterinarian.

Administration

It is recommended to begin vaccination when cats are around 8 to 9 weeks old. A second dose is given at an interval of 3-4 weeks, that is, when the cat is 12 weeks or older. Booster vaccinations are generally required for continued protection.

Revaccination for protection against feline panleukopenia virus is recommended every 3 years. For feline calicivirus and feline herpesvirus type 1, revaccination is suggested every year.

Benefits of FVRCP/Tricat Vaccine for Cats

FAQs related to FVRCP/Tricat Vaccine for Cats (Vaccination at Home) Also referred as Tricat / FVRCP (1st dose) Tricat (2nd dose) Tricat (3rd dose)

This is a vaccine for cats, providing immunization against three different viral diseases – feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), calicivirus (C), and panleukopenia (P).
The first dose of this vaccine is generally given when the cat is 8-9 weeks old, followed by a second dose after 3-4 weeks.
Typically, the immunity for feline viral rhinotracheitis and calicivirus after vaccination lasts for a year. The vaccine provides protection against panleukopenia for 3 years. Booster doses are recommended for continued protection.
This vaccine is not recommended for pregnant or lactating cats. There may be potential risks, including reproductive issues. Always consult a veterinarian before considering vaccination in such cases. In addition, keep the recently vaccinated cats away from the pregnant cat.
The vaccine is safe for cats. However, mild side effects might appear. These include slight swelling at the injection site, mild fever, sneezing, nasal discharge, or low appetite. These usually resolve within a day or two. If you are concerned about them, consult a veterinarian.
The immune response develops within a few weeks after vaccination. For calicivirus and rhinotracheitis, the onset of immunity is generally around 4 weeks, and about 3 weeks for the panleukopenia component. During this time, it is advisable to limit exposure to potentially infected animals.
Do not mix this vaccine with other vaccines or similar products unless your veterinarian advises it. It may reduce the safety or effectiveness of the vaccine.
The vaccine should only be administered to healthy cats to ensure an appropriate immune response. Cats that are ill, stressed, or receiving immunosuppressive treatment may not respond adequately to vaccination. A veterinary evaluation is recommended before vaccination.
Yes, you will be provided with a vaccination certificate or a record card after the vaccination.
