The FVRCP/Tricat vaccine for cats is a combination vaccine designed to protect kittens and cats from three major viral infections. It contains live attenuated (weakened) strains of feline viral rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), calicivirus, and panleukopenia virus.

These weakened strains help stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies without causing the disease itself. If your cat is later exposed to these viruses, the immune system is better prepared to fight the infection and reduce the severity of illness.

The FVRCP/Tricat vaccine for cats offers protection from three infectious viral diseases:

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR): It is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by feline herpesvirus. Symptoms may include fever, eye discharge, nasal congestion, and breathing difficulty.

Feline Calicivirus (C): It is a contagious viral infection that affects the upper respiratory tract and mouth. It may lead to symptoms like oral ulcers, sneezing, nasal discharge, and discomfort while eating. Rarely, a more severe form of calicivirus infection can cause systemic disease affecting multiple organs and may be fatal.

Feline Panleukopenia (P): Also known as feline distemper, it is a severe viral disease that affects the immune system and gastrointestinal tract. It can lower the white blood cell count and cause symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. 

Suitable for:

The FVRCP/Tricat vaccine for cats is suitable for 8–9-week-old cats. The vaccine can be administered to older cats if advised by the veterinarian.  Vaccination schedules may vary depending on the age of the pet, vaccination history, and local regulations.

Administration

The vaccine is administered by a licensed veterinarian by a subcutaneous injection. It is recommended to begin vaccination when cats are around 8 to 9 weeks old. A second dose is given at an interval of 3-4 weeks, that is, when the cat is 12 weeks or older. As a precaution, keep the recently vaccinated cats away from the pregnant cat.

Revaccination is recommended every 3 years for protection against the feline panleukopenia virus. For feline calicivirus and feline rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), revaccination is suggested every year.

Side Effects of FVRCP/Tricat Vaccine for Cats

The FVRCP/Tricat vaccine is generally well-tolerated in cats. Mild side effects like fever, swelling at the injection site, sneezing, nasal discharge, or low appetite may occur. However, they usually resolve on their own. In rare cases, allergic reactions or overdose may occur, causing vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or collapse.
