Understanding DHPPi Vaccine for Dogs (Vaccination at Home)

What is the DHPPi Vaccine for Dogs?

The DHPPi vaccine for dogs is a quadrivalent vaccine formulated for the immunization of adult dogs from four different diseases. It contains weakened virus strains of canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus type 2, and canine parainfluenza virus.

These weakened strains in the vaccine stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies against these strains without causing the disease. In the future, when your dog is exposed to these viruses, these antibodies mount an immune response, helping reduce the severity of the infection.

Protection from Diseases:

The DHPPi vaccine for dogs offers protection from four distinct diseases:

Distemper: It is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous disorders. The symptoms may include fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, low appetite, muscle twitches, and paralysis.

Hepatitis: It is caused by the canine adenovirus and can lead to liver disease. This may lead to symptoms like fever, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, discharge from the eyes or nose, cloudy or blue eyes, and bleeding.

Parvovirus: It affects the gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms like fever, diarrhea, vomiting, appetite loss, and lethargy. Parvovirus is highly infectious and is often fatal.

Parainfluenza: It is a contagious, airborne disease that affects the respiratory system. It can result in symptoms like cough, lethargy, fever, runny nose, and decreased appetite.

Suitable for:

The DHPPi vaccine for dogs is suitable for adult dogs who are 12 weeks of age or older.

Administration

It is recommended to get the dog vaccinated with the DHPPi vaccine when it is at least 12 weeks old. For earlier protection, the vaccine can be administered at 8 to 10 weeks of age. A second or final dose should be given 2-4 weeks later, that is, when the dog is 12 weeks or older. If vaccination has not been started before 12 weeks of age, administer one dose at 12 weeks and another at 14-16 weeks of age.

Revaccination for protection against parainfluenza virus is recommended every year. For canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, and canine adenovirus type 2, revaccination every 3 years is suggested.

The vaccine is generally administered when dogs are 12 weeks of age or older. For earlier protection, the vaccine can be given to an at 8-10 weeks old dog, followed by a second dose after 2-4 weeks. However, if the first dose has not been given before the dog is 12 weeks old, administer the first dose at 12 weeks and a second dose 2-4 weeks later.

Yes, the DHPPi vaccine for dogs may be administered along with certain other canine vaccines as advised by the veterinarian. The vaccination schedule and suitability of combined administration depend on your dog’s health condition, type of vaccine, and vaccination history.
The vaccine should only be administered to healthy dogs to ensure an appropriate immune response. Dogs that are ill, stressed, or receiving immunosuppressive treatment may not respond adequately to vaccination. A veterinary evaluation is recommended before vaccination.
