Understanding DHPPi Vaccine for Puppy (Pet Vaccination at Home)

What is the DHPPi Vaccine for Puppy?

The DHPPi vaccine for Puppy, commonly known as 5-in-1 vaccine, is formulated for the immunization of puppies against several viral diseases. It contains live attenuated (weakened) virus strains of canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV2), and canine parainfluenza virus. In addition, this vaccine also provides protection from canine infectious hepatitis caused by canine adenovirus type 1.

These weakened strains in the vaccine stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies against these strains without causing the disease. In the future, when your pet is exposed to these viruses, these antibodies mount an immune response, helping reduce the severity of the infection.

Benefits of DHPPi Vaccine for Puppy

The DHPPi vaccine for puppies offers various benefits, including:

  • Protection against several potentially life-threatening viral diseases
  • Reduced risk of costly medical treatments and hospitalization
  • Prevention of disease transmission to other dogs or puppies
  • Increased longevity for your puppy

Take a proactive step towards the health of your puppy by getting them vaccinated with our at-home vaccination service. At-home vaccination eliminates the discomfort of travel or transporting your puppy and waiting at the clinic, thus saving time. In addition, the puppy does not have to undergo the stress of an unknown environment at the clinic and remains in the familiarity and comfort of your home.

Protection from Diseases:

The DHPPi vaccine for Puppy offers protection from several diseases:

Canine Distemper: It is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous disorders. The symptoms may include fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, low appetite, and seizures.

Canine Parvovirus: It affects the gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms like bloody diarrhea, severe vomiting, appetite loss, and weakness. Parvovirus is highly infectious and is often fatal.

Canine Respiratory Diseases: The vaccine provides protection against respiratory diseases like parainfluenza or kennel cough caused by parainfluenza virus and canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV2). Common symptoms of these diseases may include cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, breathing difficulty, and fever.

Canine Infectious Hepatitis: It is caused by the canine adenovirus type 1 and can lead to liver disease. This may lead to symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, discharge from the eyes or nose, and bleeding.

Suitable for:

The DHPPi vaccine for Puppy is suitable for puppies from 8 weeks of age or as recommended by the veterinarian. Vaccination schedules may vary depending on the age of the pet, vaccination history, and local regulations.

Administration

The vaccine is administered by a subcutaneous injection. It is recommended to get the puppy vaccinated with the DHPPi vaccine as early as 8 to 10 weeks of age. A second dose should be given 2-4 weeks later, that is, when the puppy is 12 weeks or older. If vaccination has not been started before 12 weeks of age, administer one dose at 12 weeks and another at 14-16 weeks of age.

Annual revaccination is recommended for protection against respiratory disease caused by parainfluenza virus. For canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, canine infectious hepatitis, and respiratory disease caused by canine adenovirus type 2, revaccination every 3 years is suggested. Keep the vaccinated puppies away from sources of infection like crowded places or kennels, for at least 7 days after vaccination.

Side Effects of DHPPi Vaccine for Puppy

The DHPPi vaccine for puppies is generally well-tolerated. However, it can cause mild side effects in some cases, such as swelling at the injection site, tiredness, reduced appetite, lethargy, discomfort, and mild fever. These effects persist only for a short duration and usually resolve on their own. In rare cases, an allergic reaction to the vaccine may occur. FAQs related to DHPPi Vaccine for Puppy (Pet Vaccination at Home)

The 5-in-1 vaccine commonly refers to the DHPPi vaccine for Puppy. It provides immunization to puppies against four different canine viruses – canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, canine parainfluenza virus, and canine adenovirus type 2. In addition, it also provides protection against canine infectious hepatitis caused by canine adenovirus type 1.
The first dose of this vaccine is generally given when the puppy is 8-10 weeks old, followed by a second dose after 2-4 weeks. However, if the first dose has not been given before the puppy is 12 weeks old, administer the first dose at 12 weeks and a second dose 2-4 weeks later.
Typically, the immunity for canine distemper, canine parvovirus, canine infectious hepatitis, and respiratory disease caused by adenovirus lasts for at least 3 years after vaccination. For the parainfluenza virus, the immunity persists for a year.
Yes, the DHPPi vaccine for puppy may be administered along with certain other canine vaccines as advised by the veterinarian. The vaccination schedule and suitability of combined administration depend on your puppy’s health condition, type of vaccine, and vaccination history.
The vaccine should only be administered to healthy puppies to ensure an appropriate immune response. Puppies that are ill should receive the vaccine after they have recovered. In addition, puppies that are receiving immunosuppressive treatment have an increased risk of adverse reactions from the vaccine and therefore should not receive this vaccine. A veterinary evaluation is recommended before vaccination.
Before vaccination, inform the veterinarian about any ongoing medications or recent illnesses, ensure your puppy is healthy at the time of vaccination, and, if possible, share previous vaccination history and any allergic reactions to the vaccine.
The vaccine is well-tolerated but may lead to mild side effects in some cases, like slight fever, low energy, reduced appetite, lethargy, or swelling at the injection site. The side effects usually resolve on their own. In rare cases, an allergic reaction may occur. In case of a severe reaction, immediately contact a veterinarian.
