What is the DHPPi Vaccine for Puppy? 

The DHPPi vaccine for Puppy, commonly known as 5-in-1 vaccine, is formulated for the immunization of puppies against several viral diseases. It contains live attenuated (weakened) virus strains of canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV2), and canine parainfluenza virus. In addition, this vaccine also provides protection from canine infectious hepatitis caused by canine adenovirus type 1.

These weakened strains in the vaccine stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies against these strains without causing the disease. In the future, when your pet is exposed to these viruses, these antibodies mount an immune response, helping reduce the severity of the infection.

Protection from Diseases:

The DHPPi vaccine for Puppy offers protection from several diseases:

Canine Distemper: It is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous disorders. The symptoms may include fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, low appetite, and seizures.

Canine Parvovirus: It affects the gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms like bloody diarrhea, severe vomiting, appetite loss, and weakness. Parvovirus is highly infectious and is often fatal.

Canine Respiratory Diseases: The vaccine provides protection against respiratory diseases like parainfluenza or kennel cough caused by parainfluenza virus and canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV2). Common symptoms of these diseases may include cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, breathing difficulty, and fever.

Suitable for:

The DHPPi vaccine for Puppy is suitable for puppies from 8 weeks of age or as recommended by the veterinarian. Vaccination schedules may vary depending on the age of the pet, vaccination history, and local regulations.

Administration

The vaccine is administered by a subcutaneous injection. It is recommended to get the puppy vaccinated with the DHPPi vaccine as early as 8 to 10 weeks of age. A second dose should be given 2-4 weeks later, that is, when the puppy is 12 weeks or older. If vaccination has not been started before 12 weeks of age, administer one dose at 12 weeks and another at 14-16 weeks of age. 

Annual revaccination is recommended for protection against respiratory disease caused by parainfluenza virus. For canine parvovirus, canine distemper virus, canine infectious hepatitis, and respiratory disease caused by canine adenovirus type 2, revaccination every 3 years is suggested. Keep the vaccinated puppies away from sources of infection like crowded places or kennels, for at least 7 days after vaccination.

Side Effects of DHPPi Vaccine for Puppy

The DHPPi vaccine for puppies is generally well-tolerated. However, it can cause mild side effects in some cases, such as swelling at the injection site, tiredness, reduced appetite, lethargy, discomfort, and mild fever. These effects persist only for a short duration and usually resolve on their own. In rare cases, an allergic reaction to the vaccine may occur. Consult a veterinarian immediately if an allergic reaction occurs.
