Understanding Menactra Vaccine (Vaccination at Home)
What is Menactra Vaccine?
The Menactra vaccine is indicated for active immunization to help prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by certain strains of Neisseria meningitidis (serogroups A, C, Y, and W). This infection can lead to serious conditions such as meningitis and bloodstream infection. The vaccine contains polysaccharides derived from capsules of N. meningitidis serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135. These polysaccharides are individually conjugated to diphtheria toxoid protein. This vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce protective antibodies against the bacteria. It is essential to take the vaccine doses as per the doctor’s advice for adequate protection against the disease.
Who should get vaccinated?
The Menactra vaccine is recommended to develop immunity to Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135, which cause invasive meningococcal disease. Menactra is approved for use in individuals 9 months through 55 years of age. Menactra does not prevent N. meningitidis serogroup B disease. Vaccination is particularly recommended for those at increased risk of exposure or severe disease. These may include individuals who have been in close contact with someone infected with meningococcal disease.
Administration:
It will be administered by a qualified healthcare professional. Kindly do not self-administer. Menactra is administered as a single 0.5 mL dose by intramuscular injection, preferably in the anterolateral thigh or deltoid region (upper arm), depending on the recipient's age and muscle mass.
Primary Vaccination:
- In children 9 through 23 months of age, Menactra is given as a 2-dose series at least three months apart.
- For individuals 2 through 55 years of age, Menactra is given as a single dose.
Booster Vaccination:
- A single booster dose may be given to individuals 15 through 55 years of age at continued risk for meningococcal disease, if at least 4 years have elapsed since the prior dose.
Benefits of Menactra Vaccine:
- Helps prevent meningitis and bloodstream infections caused by Neisseria meningitidis
- Reduces the risk of severe complications such as brain damage, hearing loss, or death.
- Helps prevent outbreaks and transmission of infection in communities and crowded environments.
