Overview
What is CD4?
CD4 lymphocyte count is a test for measuring the number of CD4 (also known as T cells) in the body. It is conducted on patients affected by HIV or AIDS to identify the effect of the HIV medicines on them. Its result helps doctors determine whether the medicines may be allowed to continue or be changed instead.
The test is performed every 3 to 6 months, by taking a blood sample from a vein in your arm. A result of CD4 count in the range of 500-1000 (no of cells/cubic mm) indicates that the body is functioning normally. A result of 250-500 (no of cells/cubic mm) indicates the presence of HIV. A Result of less than 200 (no of cells/cubic mm) indicates AIDS.
