Rimonabant is used in combination with diet and exercise for reducing obesity. It is also prescribed to overweight patients with other risk factors such as type 2 diabetes or dyslipidemia (abnormal level of fat in the blood).

How it works

Rimonabant belongs to a group of medications known as cannabinoid-1 receptor blocker (CB1). It blocks certain chemicals in the brain leading to reduced appetite and thus helps in controlling body weight and energy balance.

  • Do not take if patient is allergic to rimonabant or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if patient is suffering from depression or being treated with anti-depressive medicines.
  • Do not  take if patients < 18 years and not given to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
