How Dorzolamide works

Dorzolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It works by decreasing the production of aqueous humour (fluid in the eye), thereby lowering the increased eye pressure.

Expert advice for Dorzolamide

  • Dorzolamide helps lower high pressure in the eye and reduce the risk of vision loss.
  • For best results, put one drop 2-3 times daily in the affected eye(s).
  • Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after instilling the drop. This minimizes the risk of side effects.
  • Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, or to your eye, to avoid contaminating the eye drops.
  • Remove contact lenses before using Dorzolamide, and wait at least 15 minutes before re-inserting them.
  • When applying multiple eye medications, wait for at least 5-15 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution of the medicine.

Q. What does Dorzolamide do?

Dorzolamide reduces the pressure inside the eyes, known as intraocular pressure. This reduces the risk of damage to the optic nerve responsible for normal vision. If the pressure in the eye is not controlled, it can gradually lead to blindness. Dorzolamide effectively controls glaucoma by decreasing the pressure in the eyes.

Q. How long does Dorzolamide take to work?

Usually, Dorzolamide starts working soon after instilling it. However, it may take around 8 hours to show beneficial effects. Consult your doctor if you do not find significant results or if your eyes feel irritated after using Dorzolamide.

Q. Can I stop Dorzolamide if I am fine now?

No, you should not stop using Dorzolamide without consulting your doctor. If you stop taking this medicine suddenly, the pressure in your eyes may not be controlled which may increase the risk of loss of sight. Consult your doctor if you wish to stop the medication.

Q. Should I keep Dorzolamide in the refrigerator?

You do not need to refrigerate Dorzolamide after opening the bottle. However, store it in a cool place and below 25℃. Keep the container tightly closed and away from sunlight.

You should contact your doctor immediately if you develop an eye infection, conjunctivitis or an eyelid reaction. Also, you should inform the doctor if you have an eye injury or eye surgery. Discuss with your doctor if you have to continue using Dorzolamide.

No, you should remove your contact lenses before instilling Dorzolamide. You can re-insert the lens 15 minutes after using Dorzolamide. Contact your doctor if there is any eye irritation that persists.
