What does ‘fake’ medicine truly mean? There are different terms that are interchangeably used. Let us help you understand the difference between counterfeit, substandard, adulterated and NSQ drugs:

Counterfeit: These medicines are deliberately made to deceive and infringe on a registered trademark. Counterfeit medicines can contain toxic contaminants, such as gypsum, amphetamine, and commercial grade paints.
Substandard: These medicines are authorized but don't meet the manufacturer's quality standards. They are also known as "out of specification".
Adulterated: These medicines are made by partially or fully substituting the original drug with a similar-looking substance. The substitute substance may be inferior in therapeutic and chemical properties.
NSQ (Not of Standard Quality):These are the drugs that fail to meet quality standards or specifications. The term 'standards of quality' is defined in the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940. NSQ drugs can lead to ineffective treatment, and while not always immediately harmful, they can pose health risks to consumers.
