Melitracen is used in the treatment of depression, Anxiety, bed-wetting, obsessive-compulsive disorder, insomnia and neuropathic pain. It is used in patients intolerant of or unresponsive to other treatment options for depression.
How Melitracen works
Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant. It increases the levels of chemical messengers in the brain that help in regulating the mood and treat depression.

  • It may take 4 to 6 weeks for Melitracen to start working. Keep taking it as prescribed.
  • It may cause sleepiness. Take it at bedtime and do not drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how it affects you.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol when taking Melitracen as it may cause excessive sleepiness.
  • Monitor your weight during the treatment as this medicine can cause weight gain and increased appetite.
  • It may cause sudden drop in your blood pressure. Rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down.
  • Talk to your doctor if you notice sudden mood changes or develop suicidal thoughts.
  • The main dose should be taken at night as this medicine may produce drowsiness or sleepiness.
  • It can take 2 to 3 weeks for Melitracen to start working.
  • You should continue the treatment for at least 6 months after you feel better to stop depression from coming back.
  • If your doctor asks you to stop Melitracen, you should reduce the dose slowly over 4 weeks. You should not discontinue it abruptly.
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery as it may decrease alertness.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol when taking the Melitracen, as it may cause excessive drowsiness and calmness.
  • The addiction/dependence potential of Melitracen is very less.
  • It may be extremely dangerous in overdose.

Let your doctor know about all the other medicines you are taking because they may affect, or be affected by, this medicine. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding to prevent any harmful effects on the baby.
Yes, Melitracen can cause urinary problems. It is more commonly seen in elderly patients who are above 65 years of age. The patient may face difficulty in passing urine which can further lead to a urinary tract infection. You should consult your doctor immediately if you develop these symptoms.
