Insomnia is defined as the difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep. Insomnia is very common and occurs between 30% and 50% of the general population. The women are more affected than the men. The episodes of insomnia may come and go and may last up to many weeks.

Broadly insomnia is caused due to situational factors, medical, or psychiatric conditions. Major causes are:
1. Stressful situations
2. Presence of an acute medical condition
3. Withdrawal of drug or alcohol
4. Acute medical illness
5. Going to bed at different times of the day
6. Working in night shift
7. Poor sleeping environment
8. Excessive use of alcohol
9. Heavy smoking
10. Excessive caffeine intake
11. Anxiety
12. Schizophrenia
13. Bipolar disorder
 
Signs and Symptoms
 
The common symptoms include:
1. Daytime fatigue
2. Daytime sleepiness
3. Mood changes
4. Poor attention and concentration
5. Poor energy
6. Anxiety
7. Headaches
8. Increased errors and mistakes
 
Investigations
 
1. The evaluation shall start with a thorough medical history and psychiatric history.
2. A routine physical examination may also be carried out. The assessment focuses on sleep history which includes:
a) Duration of the sleep
b) Time of sleep
c) Duration when you are awake
d) Time and length of day nap
e) Time of sleeping
3. Other diagnostic tests include:
a) Polysomnography
b) Actigraphy
 
Treatment
 
1. You may be given certain over the counter medications.
2. Avoid consumption of alcohol before going to bed.
3. Do not go to bed hungry.
4. Exercise regularly
