Tazarotene is used in the treatment of psoriasis and acne.

How Tazarotene works

Tazarotene is a form of vitamin A. It works by slowing down the rapid growth of skin cells, and blocks certain substances which cause inflammation (redness and swelling) on skin. This reduces scaling and thickening of the skin in psoriasis and clears acne.

  • Tazarotene should be applied as per dose and duration suggested by the doctor.
  • Finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
  • Wash your hands properly before and after applying the medicine.
  • Avoid getting in the eyes, nose, or mouth. If accidental exposure occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  • Avoid exposing your skin to strong sunlight, use a sunscreen lotion or make sure your skin is protected with clothing.
  • Do not cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
  • Inform your doctor if the infection has not cleared up after four weeks of treatment.

Q. How should Tazarotene be applied?

A thin film of the Tazarotene should be applied once daily in the evening. Care should be taken to apply it only to areas of affected skin, avoid application to healthy skin or in skin folds. Treatment is limited to 10% body surface area (approximately equivalent to the total skin area of one arm).

Q. Does Tazarotene help with acne scars?

Tazarotene is used for treating acne along with reducing blackheads and whiteheads. It acts by slowing skin cell overgrowth and decreasing skin cell inflammation, which can lead to acne.

Q. How long does it take Tazarotene to work?

The recommended duration differs for different ailments. The symptoms of acne usually improve within 4 weeks of treatment with Tazarotene. However, for treating psoriasis, the symptoms may take about 1 to 4 weeks in showing improvement. Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse.

Q. Is Tazarotene good for skin?

Yes, Tazarotene has been identified to be useful for skin. It works by increasing the thickness of the outer skin layers which helps in reducing facial wrinkles and discoloration. It is generally helpful in patients who are using other skin care and sunlight avoidance programs.

Q. What precautions do I need to follow while applying Tazarotene?

Tazarotene should not be used on healthy, eczematous or inflamed skin, as it may cause severe irritation. Externally used medications and cosmetics that have a strong drying effect should be avoided. Weather extremes, such as wind or cold, may be more irritating to patients using Tazarotene. Avoid excessive exposure to UV rays (sun, solarium, PUVA therapy, or UVB therapy) during the treatment. Use sunscreen and protective clothing during Tazarotene therapy.

Q. Is Tazarotene safe to be used in pregnancy?

Tazarotene is not advised to be taken during pregnancy. An effective birth control should be used for a woman of child bearing potential. However, in order to conceive, consult your doctor about a time period after which pregnancy can be contemplated after using Tazarotene. In case you become pregnant while using this medicine, stop using it and contact your doctor immediately as this product may cause birth defects.

Q. Can I use cosmetics while using Tazarotene?

Cosmetics and skin care products can be used but preferably 1 hour before or after using Tazarotene. This is done so that the cosmetics/skin care products are allowed to pass slowly through the skin and absorbed completely. Avoid using products which have excessive drying effects.
