Q. What is Methylcobalamin/Mecobalamin?

Methylcobalamin/Mecobalamin is vitamin B12. It is required by the body to make red blood cells and maintain a healthy nervous system. It is also important for releasing energy from food and using vitamin B9 (folic acid).

Q. Why can’t I get sufficient vitamin B12 in my diet?

The primary dietary source of vitamin B12 is meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. Vitamin B12 is not found naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables, and grains. Therefore, it is usually noticed that vegetarians or vegans are deficient in vitamin B12.

Q. What happens if I have vitamin B12 deficiency?

Vitamin B12 deficiency may cause tiredness, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, and megaloblastic anemia. It may also lead to nerve problems such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. Other symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency may include problems with balance, depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory, and soreness of the mouth or tongue.

Q. When can a carnitine deficiency occur?

Carnitine deficiency may be of two types, primary and secondary. Primary is genetic and may show symptoms by five years of age. Whereas, secondary may occur due to certain disorders like kidney problems (chronic kidney failure) and use of antibiotics that reduces its absorption and increases its excretion.

Q. What happens if Vitamin D is low?

Low levels of Vitamin D may cause rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Vitamin D deficiency may also increase the risk of diabetes mellitus 1, high blood pressure, depression, some cancers, and osteoporosis.

Q. Is it ok to take Folic Acid when not pregnant?

Generally, folic acid requirements are met from the diet and additional supplements are not required. It is recommended to take Folic Acid only when you have a deficiency of folic acid. This applies for everyone except the pregnant females. Females who want or might become pregnant are advised to take Folic Acid during a period from at least 4 weeks before pregnancy up to 3 months of pregnancy.
