How caffeine affects sleep and brain health

Consuming caffeine close to bedtime scrambles the brain’s deep sleep rhythms (delta waves) and amps up wakefulness signals (beta waves), pushing the brain into a heightened “emergency” state.

Disrupts Deep Sleep

This “alert” state interferes with the brain’s natural rest cycle, affecting memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and overall brain repair.

Caffeine inhibits adenosine, the brain’s sleep-inducing molecule, by binding to its receptors. This blockade may even rewire how the brain responds to natural sleep cues.
