Understanding Heart Wellness Package

What is Heart Wellness Package?

The Heart Wellness Package helps evaluate the overall heart health. It includes a range of tests aimed at assessing cardiovascular function, identifying potential risk factors, and providing insights for maintaining a healthy heart.

The Heart Wellness Package is tailored to provide individuals with a thorough assessment of their cardiovascular health and promote overall well-being. This comprehensive package includes a series of blood tests aimed at evaluating various aspects of heart function, including heart risk markers like High Sensitive troponin-I, lipid (fats) levels, and fasting blood sugar levels. The tests included in this package help doctors to suggest lifestyle modifications or prescribe medications to manage your heart conditions and formulate a treatment plan.

The Heart Wellness Package aims to identify potential risk factors for heart disease, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, or diabetes enabling early intervention and preventive measures. This package is also used for regularly monitoring pre-existing heart problems if you have other risk factors such as obesity, old age, or a family history of heart disease.

Usually, overnight fasting (8-12 hours) is required before going for the Heart Wellness Package test. However, drinking water is acceptable. It is important to inform the doctor if you are taking other medications or supplements as they might interfere with test results. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking them temporarily.

Lab test results may vary across different laboratories. Abnormal test results require an expert interpretation, therefore, never try to self-medicate at home based solely on these results, and always consult a doctor for proper understanding of the test results. Discuss your symptoms and medical history to help the doctor correlate your clinical and laboratory findings, leading to a more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan tailored to your specific health needs.

What is Heart Wellness Package used for?

The Heart Wellness Package is done:

  • As a part of routine health screening.
  • To assess the overall functioning of the heart and blood vessels.
  • To identify individuals at risk for cardiovascular problems.
  • In individuals with risk factors like family history, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and prior heart attack or stroke.
  • To monitor the effectiveness of treatments in individuals already diagnosed with a heart-related disease.

What does Heart Wellness Package measure?

Contains 10 tests

The Heart Wellness Package helps assess overall heart health and analyzes the risk of developing heart ailments, particularly if you are obese, have a family history of heart disease, or you have other comorbid conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. The wide range of blood tests included in this package helps evaluate the lipids, fats, proteins, enzymes, blood glucose, etc. that may affect your heart's activity. Any derangement in any of these parameters may indicate a potential heart problem.

The Heart Wellness Package measures lipids, which are essential for the proper functioning of the body. However, when present in excess, they can deposit in the arteries, narrowing them, and making it difficult for blood to flow (also known as atherosclerosis). This is why understanding the lipid levels is crucial for assessing the risk of heart disease. This package also measures the levels of troponin-I, a protein released when the heart muscle is damaged. It helps in the early diagnosis of heart-related conditions, guiding timely medical intervention. Apart from these, the Heart Wellness Package also determines your fasting blood glucose levels as high blood glucose from diabetes can damage your blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart. Over time, this damage can lead to heart disease.

Getting tested with the Heart Wellness Package enables your doctor to suggest lifestyle changes such as diet or exercise or initiate appropriate treatment to prevent possible complications.

High Sensitive Troponin-I, Quantitative

The High Sensitive Troponin-I, Quantitative test measures the concentration of Troponin-I in the bloodstream. It is a cardiac-specific protein released into the bloodstream when there is damage or injury to the heart muscles. Elevated levels of highly sensitive Troponin-I serve as a sensitive indicator of cardiac events, such as Myocardial infarction (heart attack) or other acute coronary syndrome. This test helps doctors determine whether a patient has experienced a heart attack.

Troponin levels typically rise sharply within 3 to 12 hours after a heart attack, peaking about 24 hours later. Doctors often repeat this test several times over a 24-hour period to assess the extent of heart damage.

The High Sensitive Troponin-I, Quantitative test helps doctors assess and monitor cardiac health, enabling early detection and timely intervention in case of a cardiac injury.

FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar)

A fasting blood sugar test measures the glucose level in the body under overnight fasting conditions. Glucose serves as the body's energy currency and is broken down through metabolism to produce energy. Hormones and enzymes produced by the liver and pancreas control this process. The hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas, regulates blood glucose levels. When these levels are high, such as after a meal, insulin is secreted to transport glucose into cells for energy production. Elevated glucose levels in the body after fasting may indicate a risk of developing prediabetes or diabetes, which can be of two types- Type 1, caused by little or no insulin production, and Type 2, caused by insulin resistance or decreased insulin production.

Lipid Profile

The Lipid Profile assesses the level of specific fat molecules called lipids in the blood and helps determine the risk of heart ailments. This test determines the amount of different types of lipids, including total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides. Lipids play a pivotal role in the functioning of the body. They are crucial components of the cell membranes and hormones, provide cushioning, and are a storehouse of energy. Any alterations in the lipid levels may lead to potential heart ailments, making their monitoring crucial.

No, there is no risk associated with the Heart Wellness Package. However, some individuals may feel a slight sting when a needle is pricked and experience some normal bleeding that is usually not bothersome. Q. Why is the lipid profile important for heart health?

The lipid profile is important because high levels of lipid molecules such as cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. can increase the risk of developing atherosclerosis and other heart diseases.

Q. How is abnormal glucose level related to heart disease?

Abnormal glucose or sugar levels can indicate a risk of diabetes, which is a significant risk factor for heart disease.

Q. What is the role of troponin-I in assessing heart health?

The troponin-I test measures the levels of troponin-I , a protein in the blood. This protein is released when the heart muscle has been damaged, such as occurs with a heart attack. That is why troponin-I is important for assessing heart health.
