Topaz 200 Tablet is a medicine used to treat epilepsy (seizures) and to prevent migraines. It is also used in the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a rare, but severe form of epilepsy that starts in early childhood).

Topaz 200 Tablet controls seizures by decreasing the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain. It may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time, each day. If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember it and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor may cause an increased frequency of seizures. Your doctor may advise regular monitoring of serum bicarbonate levels while you are taking this medicine.

Some of the common side effects of this medicine include nausea, taste change, fatigue, diarrhea, weight loss, loss of appetite, and memory impairment. It may also cause vision problems like myopia or glaucoma, so it is important to get your eyesight checked before you start the treatment and regularly thereafter. You may experience dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Q. For how long do I need to take Topaz 200 Tablet?

The dose and duration of this medicine will depend on your doctor’s advice. Topaz 200 Tablet does not cure your condition (seizures/migraine) but prevents them from occurring. So, you may have to keep taking it for months or years depending on improvement in your symptoms and side effects that may occur.

Q. Is Topaz 200 Tablet good for anxiety?

Topaz 200 Tablet is not indicated for the treatment of anxiety. Please consult your doctor before taking the medicine.

Q. What are the serious side effects of Topaz 200 Tablet?

Serious side effects of Topaz 200 Tablet are rare. The serious effects of Topaz 200 Tablet may include glaucoma (difficulty in seeing, eye pain and blurred vision), kidney stones (sharp pain in your sides or lower back) and metabolic acidosis (tiredness, loss of appetite, irregular and faint heartbeat). Other serious side effects of Topaz 200 Tablet could be suicidal thoughts and insufficient sweating (some children taking Topaz 200 Tablet may not sweat enough in hot weather, causing their body temperatures to rise).

Q. I am taking valproic acid for fits. Will Topaz 200 Tablet interfere with the working of valproic acid? Can this combination be taken?

Topaz 200 Tablet does not interfere with the working of valproic acid, but it increases the risk of getting excess levels of ammonia in blood (hyperammonemia). Increased levels of ammonia in blood can be dangerous and may cause difficulty in thinking, remembering information or solving problems. It may also decrease your alertness and make you feel very sleepy with low energy. Immediately inform your doctor if you notice these symptoms. It is important to know that, in rare cases, Topaz 200 Tablet alone can cause hyperammonemia.

Q. Can Topaz 200 Tablet be used in children?

Yes, Topaz 200 Tablet is used for seizures in children more than 2 years of age. However, because of the lack of any reports, this medicine is not recommended to be used in children for migraine.

Q. Since I have started using Topaz 200 Tablet people are saying that I have lost weight. Is it because of Topaz 200 Tablet or something else for which I should get investigated?

It could be due to Topaz 200 Tablet because Topaz 200 Tablet commonly causes weight loss probably due to decrease in appetite. If you still have any doubts, talk to your doctor who will advise you appropriately.
