Frequently asked questions about FSYS Products
Frequently asked questions about Fluconazole
Q. Can I take FSYS with omeprazole?
FSYS can increase the level or effect of omeprazole by decreasing its breakdown (metabolism). Please consult your doctor before taking the two medicines together.
Q. Is FSYS an antibiotic or a steroid? What is it used for?
FSYS is neither an antibiotic nor a steroid. It is an antifungal medicine and is used to treat fungal infections including yeast infections of vagina, mouth, throat, esophagus (food pipe), abdomen, lungs, blood and other organs and cryptococcal meningitis (infection of the membranes covering the brain and spine). It is also used to prevent candidal infections in patients who are likely to become infected because they are being treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy before a bone marrow transplant.
Q. I have been prescribed FSYS for esophageal candidiasis. How long should I continue to take it?
The length of the treatment should be as per the doctor’s advice. In general, for esophageal candidiasis, you should take the treatment for a minimum of 3 weeks and continue to take it for 2 weeks after the symptoms have resolved.
Q. Does FSYS cause liver damage?
If you already have liver problem or a serious medical problem, you need to be very careful while taking FSYS since serious liver damage may occur. Call your doctor if your skin or eyes become yellow, your urine turns darker, your stools become light-colored, have severe skin itching or if you vomit or feel like vomiting.
Q. Can I stop taking FSYS if my symptoms resolve and I start feeling better?
No, do not stop taking the medicines even if you start feeling better. Continue taking FSYS as long as your doctor has advised you to take it. If you do not complete the treatment, your infection may come back.
Q. Does FSYS have any effect on birth control pills?
FSYS does not interfere with the working of birth control pills. So, you can continue taking birth control pills with FSYS.
Q. What if I forget to take FSYS?
If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when as scheduled. Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking it as per the schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose. This may increase the chance of you getting an unwanted side effect. In case of any confusion contact, ask your doctor.
Q. What is drug resistance? Is it possible to develop resistance to FSYS?
Sometimes it happens that the fungi gets modified in your body and the medicine no longer works. This is called drug resistance. Resistance to FSYS has been reported in some candida species (Candida krusei), for which it should not be used. Take the complete course of FSYS to avoid drug resistance.
Q. Is it okay to take rifabutin along with FSYS?
FSYS may interfere with the working of rifabutin. Therefore, you have to be careful while taking both together as side effects of rifabutin, like uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye), are more likely to occur when both are taken together.
Q. What if I accidentally take more than the recommended dose of FSYS?
Taking more than the recommended dose may cause hallucinations and paranoid behavior. Seek medical support in a nearby hospital or call your doctor.
Q. Is it safe to take warfarin and FSYS together?
FSYS may increase the amount of warfarin in the body. This may result in toxicity of warfarin. Get blood investigations done for bleeding time (blood test done to see how long it takes for the clot to form). Depending on the results of this blood test, you may need to get the dose of warfarin modified.
