NMO/Aquaporin 4 test is performed in people suspected of Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), a rare autoimmune disease that destroys the myelin sheath of the optic nerve (Neuritis nervi optici) and simultaneously or a few months later, the spinal cord (Myelitis). Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) is the major antigen present in NMO and its antibodies (specific proteins or Ab) can easily be detected using this test. NMO AQP4-Ab are disease-specific autoantibodies, found in 70-80% of NMO patients. This test also helps in differentiating NMO from Multiple sclerosis (MS) by detecting highly specific serum autoantibody markers, frequently present in NMO, but may be absent in individuals with or without MS. Testing can help in disease detection, monitoring disease progression, and assessing treatment response.
