Understanding LYME (Borrelia Burgdorferi) Antibody, IgM
What is LYME (Borrelia Burgdorferi) Antibody, IgM?
The LYME (Borrelia Burgdorferi) Antibody, IgM test helps assess the exposure to Borrelia Burgdorferi, a bacteria which causes Lyme disease. This disease is transmitted to humans through ticks infected with Borrelia Burgdorferi bacteria. Lyme disease symptoms include fever, fatigue, joint pain and a characteristic skin rash called Erythema migrans. This test helps detect IgM antibodies against Lyme disease. These antibodies help detect the infection early, as IgM is the initial antibody to respond to Lyme disease and persist for a short time. If your test result shows a high number of IgM antibodies, you will likely have a new or recent Lyme infection. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics.
