This test measures the levels of IgM antibodies specific to the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) - a type of herpes virus, in your blood. It helps determine if you have had a recent or current infection with EBV. Antibodies against viral capsid antigen (Anti-VCA) IgM appear early in EBV infection and usually disappear within four to six weeks. EBV causes Infectious mononucleosis, a disorder associated with fatigue, sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes & enlarged spleen. The virus is present in the saliva of the patients and is very contagious.
