Herpes Simplex Virus 1 DNA PCR is used to detect HSV-1 in the blood through PCR(Polymerase Chain Reaction technique. PCR detects the genetic material, DNA of the virus.Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2) is the main cause of genital herpes which is a sexually transmitted disease.
What is Herpes Simplex Virus 1 DNA PCR used for?
The doctor orders this test when a patient has symptoms like blistering sores around the mouth and genitals, itching and pain during urination (in case of genital herpes). The patient may also present symptoms like fever, fatigue, headaches, loss of appetite and swollen lymph nodes. If HSV spreads to the eyes, it can also cause eye pain, discharge and gritty sensation in the eyes.

Interpretations
If the result comes back as positive, it implies that either the person has herpes or that he/she has been exposed to the Herpes Simplex Virus 1.
